CIC have been researching aircraft accident/incident in terms of occupant protection and impact energy management for the past 15 years. This in the main concerns the development of a well defined continuous load path for the loads induced by accelerating or decelerating masses, ensuring the required level of energy being absorbed by each of the components within the load path whilst maintaining the occupant/cargo’s minimum residual space. Such assessments, design and development cover one or more of the following elements:
Aircraft’s structural properties, i.e. energy absorbing collapse mechanism, collapse sequence, failure loads, etc. Seat structure properties carrying restrained occupants and subjected to aircraft’s crash pulse. Design and development of various restraint systems. Protective elements, i.e. foam covering, airbags, etc., to ensure the occupant contact load does not exceed human tolerance. Analysis and visualisation of air accidents.
