Assessment of Impact Surface Material Models
As a partner in the European Community Programme CRASURV,
CIC performed the numerical simulations of impact surfaces material models.
The structural response of an aircraft during an impact with the ground is highly
dependent upon the terrain encountered. Significant structural response differences are
likely to be produced when the impact surface is of soft soil type as against rigid
surfaces.
An extensive search was conducted to collect material data for soil properties which
then were translated into appropriate LS-DYNA material model formats to describe various
ground types which can be modelled as sand, sand and gravel mixture and concrete.
The methodology to develop ground models was based on extending the problem from a
simple to a complex structure/ground interactions. The initial ground model - based on
simple rigid impactor - formed the basis of ground definition and the ground/structure
interactions. The final ground model assessed the behaviour of sand and concrete materials
and the ground/structure interactions for both rigid and deforming section of a fuselage
structure.
