R66 Bus Rollover Platform
In the EU around 30,000 bus or coach occupants are injured every year.
Cranfield Impact Centre was instrumental in the formulation of ECE Regulation 66 (R66),
the first ever virtual testing approach approved by the UK Government for coach rollover approval. The regulation has been adopted by the EU member states to improve safety by providing a safe zone within vehicle during rollover.
The R66 bus rollover rig consists of a tilting platform 0.8m above the ground. The rig
is used to carry out full-scale bus rollover tests which conform to the ECE Regulation 66.
R66 is a required standard for all newly
registered coaches in the EU.
The rig can cater for vehicles with a wheelbase up to 8m and has been designed for vehicle
weights up to 15 tonnes.
The tilting of the platform is done using a crane which ensures a well-controlled and
smooth motion. The coach is then free to topple off the platform once it's centre of
gravity over-balances the pivot position.
CIC can also prepare the residual space templates and any other measuring systems required
for R66 Approval. Impact sequences can be photographed with a high speed digital camera at
up to 1,000 frames per second. Video facilities are also available.
