The Universal Coach Safety Seat

The Universal Coach Safety Seat (patent-pending) is the first of its kind in the world. Development was commissioned by the Department of Transport (UK). The prototype twin seat was developed together with Plaxton Coach and Bus (assisted by A.W. Chapman) and full-scale tested at Millbrook Proving Ground.

Technical features:
  • carries 3-point belts and also protects the unbelted or lap-belted occupants sitting behind
  • rear occupants are protected by both empty and fully laden seat.
  • injury criteria met : ECE Regulation 80 and 1996 Amendment to the 76/115/EEC Directive for head, thorax and femurs and the new neck injury criteria for M1 vehicles.

- Safety features far exceed the 1996 EEC Directives and the new Rail seat requirements -

Commercial features:
  • weight of prototype twin seat with belts, leg and anchorages = 36.3 kg (improvements possible)
  • no bigger than the standard seat, i.e. feasible for all seating positions
  • the same design offers lap and 3-point belts as optional add-on or retrofit features
  • seat back detachable with provisions for a reclining mechanism
  • conventional materials (steel tubes, plywood, foams), belts  and production methods.
