Safety of Minibus, Side and Rear Facing Seats, Belts and Headrests

CIC was involved in an EC consortium (Contract ETD/96/84097) with the objective of further enhancing the safety of passengers, with specific reference to M1, M2 and M3 vehcles:

 

FE model of minibus side-facing seat

Seat strength in M2 vehicles

  • Development of dynamic crash test pulse to represent frontal impacts
  • Assessment of suitable future test procedure
Seat strength in M3 vehicles
  • Examination of worst case occupant configurations
  • Assessment of feasibility of an adequate static test procedure

Non forward-facing seats

  • Investigation of safety aspects of side facing seats and possible use of seat belts
  • Possible additional safety provisions for rear-facing seats
Head restraints for M1 and M2 vehicle
  • Dynamic sled testing program used to show different levels of neck injuries sustained for various head restraint configurations

This project was completed in October 1997.
