Advanced Design of Crash Fail-Safe Train
CIC has participated in a number of research projects on the design rail
vehicles with improved crashworthiness and passenger protection. These were supported by
the European Commission (EC), and involved train manufacturers, engineering consultancies
and universities.
The aim of the first project (TRAINCOL) was to understand in a decisive manner:
- Crash phenomena concerning the characteristics of typical train collisions
- The induced dynamic loads and accelerations
- Effective use of advanced methods of dynamic structural analysis techniques
- Occupant protection analysis
techniques for various train crash scenarios
- Design and production of light weight and anti-crash fail-safe train structures
- Proposal of advanced regulations for railway equipment, train structures and occupant
protection
Our participation involved occupant safety and structural analysis of the railway
vehicle, including:
- Identification of the collapse mechanism
- Improving the energy absorption capability of the rail vehicle structure
- Study of the seat configurations or restraint system to enhance reductions in occupant
injury levels
- Monitoring the full-scale crash tests
